Back in 1974, the Optimist Club of Hernando was looking to kick off a fund raiser to benefit some of the local charities primarily targeting children and created the Annual Hernando A'Fair. In 2014, they celebrated their 40th anniversary and are still going strong, with close to 200 street vendors showing up to sell all sorts of arts and crafts. The A'Fair takes place the 3rd Saturday in May, and the day starts early with contestants lining up for a 5k run/walk at 7:30, rain or shine. And indeed, the year we visited, the morning started off with a few showers. The runners were not to be deterred. But the day cleared up, and the vendors set up for a full day of selling their arts, crafts, and specialty food. Entertainment takes the main stage throughout the day, and there's a great selection of music - from pop to rock, country and gospel, there's something to please just about anyone.
There's no admission to the A'Fair, and parking is free. It takes place in the Court Square Historic District, and the streets are closed off so that pedestrians can take their time meandering about.
One of the more special features of the Hernando A'Fair is that the stores lining the square open up shop for some once-a-year special sales, which draw locals and tourists alike.
Many of the vendors have free gifts for those stopping by, as well as drawings for gifts and services, and the kids' zone has several activities for the little ones: sand art, face painting, a bike rodeo, and many others.
Attendance to the A'Fair is roughly 10,000 annually, so it might be worth your time to stop by and see what the draw is.
We rate the fair at 3 out of 5 stars. The fair is indeed fun, boasting plenty of shopping, restaurants, and great food - plus a lot for the kids to do. It's certainly noble that the Optimist Club supports local charities, and that in itself is reason to visit. I'd say make the trip if you're within an hour or so traveling distance, but ultimately, there's little that separates this events from similar events in other cities. Lodging seemed scarce, which finished the score at 3 out of 5.
